JESUS CHRIST

Terrible rendition. The actors were not engaging or believable- they seemed bored. The dancers looked like minions. Couldn’t understand anything because the actors were just screeching. It didn’t even have the same ending as Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote. Don’t waste your money.

DISAPPOINTING

For those of us who knows the music, this was very, very disappointing. They shortened so many of the songs, especially at the first part of the show. So many lost opportunities! And the sound system was not working very well, either, for the beginning of the show. The one dancer was often more annoying and distracting. I am amazed that Music Circus did a MUCH better job!

JUST A CONCERT, NOT A STORY

Saw this in Sacramento Feb 2023. Spectacular singers, musicianship seemed spot on. But could not make out the lyrics due to I assume sub par mics or system. Production hit 100 mph right out of the box and never slowed. Therefore I could not make out the story, who was who, relationships among characters or story arc. The direction and style choices and frantic pacing was a disservice to the amazing talent on stage. Would not recommend this version to anyone who is seeing it for the first time, as we were.

LACK OF DIRECTION LEFT THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE. MATERIAL IN THE DARK.

The actors do not act. They sing and thats just not enough, Jesus was a weak voiced novice, Mary came out and sang and then left the stage, no acting at all. Judas sang strongly but again just sang, The biggest disappointment was the direction. If you were not familiar with the story you would be lost. A shame.

TRYING TOO HARD

The show felt contrived and mechanical. The choreography distracted from the main characters and drew attention to itself, the chorus sounded out of breath, and the band was screeching loud and felt at times as if compelled to just make noise. This show lacks the passionate embrace of the lyrics and the rock, the swing that moves the action forward and enhances the plot. I saw the show in London in the 70s and perhaps expected something as riveting as back then. Detroit show was just a poor parody.

DISAPPOINTING

The positives of this performance were that Judas, Mary and Jesus had great voices, and Jesus playing the guitar was a different adaptation. Jesus Christ Superstar is one of my top three favorite musicals, and I have seen several different performances of this musical. This was by far my least favorite. The singing was all loud and angry, with only a couple of exceptions, and the music was often too loud and overpowered the singing, even with the singers basically screaming through most of the numbers. If I was not very familiar with the music/musical, I would have found this adaptation confusing and hard to follow. I also found a lot of the choreography to be jerky, which detracted from the singing. The presentation of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Fox several years ago was immensely more enjoyable than the opening night of this presentation. My recommendation is to forego this particular version of Jesus Christ Superstar and see it the next time it comes to town.

JC SUPERSTAR

SAVE YOUR MONEY. Unfortunately, much of the cast's vocals were not so good and at some points shocking awful. I will say the cast member who played Mary (her debut) was excellent! Her voice was incredible and she gave me goose bumps. There were a few cast members voices that were okay but the actor playing JC was only good on the screechy parts of the singing. Also it appeared the cast was sharing a microphone and the sound people did not appear to adjust the volume for cast members who's voices needed more amplification. The dancers were fabulous and the instrumentalist did a great job. Overall though, I would only give it a C.
